PROJETO NO!

The Benfica Parish Council approached Mistaker Maker to create a mural under the theme “gender equality”. A noble mission that was delivered to Mariana Duarte Santos, a Portuguese artist whose work is strongly influenced by the concept of memory and narratives.

The piece that Mariana left at Largo da Revista Militar, in Benfica, is divided into two walls. The first represents a photograph of a group of women belonging to the National Council of Portuguese Women, at the 2nd Feminist and Education Congress that took place in Lisbon, in 1928. These women were the precursors of the feminist movement in Portugal, which for the right to vote , for the “civil, economic and moral improvement of women in particular and humanity in general”, quoting Adelaide Cabete in an interview with the newspaper O Mundo (1914), president and one of the founders of this Council, portrayed in this painting. The second wall includes newspaper clippings from the time, other more recent ones and a photograph of Carolina Beatriz ngelo, the first woman to exercise the right to vote in Portugal, in the elections held for the National Constituent Assembly, on May 28, 1911.

This is a tribute to all the women who fought (and continue to fight) for the rights of women and humanity, a way of praising and prolonging their memory so that their achievements can be recognized and celebrated.
