PRACTICAL SCHOOL OF CAVALRY
During 2020, Mistaker Maker was challenged by the Municipality of Torres Novas to develop an intervention that paid homage to the old Practical School of Cavalry that was installed in that city between 1902 and 1957.
In a counter-cycle with what was going on throughout Europe after the 1st World War, which removed importance from cavalry, here the Portuguese Army strongly promoted the use of the horse. In Torres Novas, great training and tournaments were organized and the daily life of the (then) village was covered by the habit of mounted cavalrymen and many areas, especially the Castle hill, were used frequently for skill and resistance training.
The photos that came to us, which reflect speed, skill, strength, magnificence and movements of enormous precision and dexterity, were the ultimate inspiration and we invited the artist Pantónio to help us transport all of this to a huge wall that punctuates one of the main entrances of the City.
It is a little or a lot of this that you can find on Rua do Bom Amor, precisely next to the old Escola Prática de Cavalaria (now the Escola Prática de Polícia). A mural that promotes a (re)discovery of the local identity and the horse.
